Breaking: Could Ethiopia Be the Next Paraíba Tourmaline Source?

For nearly four decades, "Paraíba" has meant more than a place. It's shorthand for a colour — that electric, neon blue-green that doesn't quite look like it belongs in nature. And until very recently, the entire world had only three known sources capable of producing it: Brazil, Nigeria, and Mozambique.

That short list may be about to get longer.

A New Name Enters the Conversation

The Swiss Gemmological Institute (SSEF) has confirmed it received credible trade reports of a new deposit of copper-bearing tourmaline — this time in Ethiopia. If verified, it would be the first new Paraíba source to emerge in over twenty years.

The timing is what makes this story interesting. SSEF had already been examining a group of Paraíba tourmalines whose geographic origin simply wouldn't resolve using its existing analytical methods. Two of those stones — a pair of ovals submitted for testing — are now suspected to be the first physical evidence of this potential new Ethiopian source.

In other words, the gems may have shown up at the lab before the story did.

A Quick History of How We Got Here

To understand why this matters, it helps to know how small the Paraíba family has always been:

  • Brazil — discovered in the late 1980s by Heitor Barbosa in a weathered pegmatite near São José da Batalha, in the state of Paraíba. This is where the name comes from, and where that legendary neon colour was first seen.

  • Nigeria — found in the early 2000s, helping ease the scarcity once Brazilian production slowed.

  • Mozambique — also emerged in the early 2000s, but on a much bigger scale. Mozambique went on to produce gem-quality copper-bearing tourmaline in far larger quantities, occasionally yielding rough stones weighing several hundred carats — a size almost unthinkable from the original Brazilian material.

Three countries, one colour story, for over twenty years. Now there's a fourth name on the table.

Why "Where It's From" Actually Matters

In most gemstones, origin is a footnote. In Paraíba tourmaline, it can meaningfully affect value — Brazilian material in particular tends to command a premium, partly for rarity and partly for the romance of being the original source.

But here's the catch: copper-bearing tourmalines from different countries can share strikingly similar chemical fingerprints. Telling them apart isn't always straightforward, even for a lab with decades of reference data. SSEF noted that preliminary testing shows considerable overlap between the suspected Ethiopian stones and tourmaline from Brazil specifically — the source the entire category is named after. That overlap is exactly why origin determination on certain stones has proven so difficult, and why some submissions are coming back inconclusive.

What Happens Next

Nothing here is settled. The Ethiopian deposit hasn't been independently confirmed beyond the trade reports SSEF received, and the lab has been careful to frame its findings as preliminary. SSEF says it's now working to characterise this potential new material in depth and sharpen the tools needed to separate it from established sources.

Still, every previous addition to this list — Nigeria, then Mozambique — reshaped how the trade thinks about Paraíba tourmaline. If Ethiopia is confirmed, it won't just add a new mining location to a textbook. It will add a new chapter to one of the gem world's most coveted colours.
